Beagles are sturdy, generally healthy dogs with a lifespan of 12–15 years. But like all breeds, they have specific health vulnerabilities. Understanding these issues early helps you take preventive action and catch problems before they become serious.

Obesity — The Biggest Health Risk for Beagles

Obesity is the most common and most preventable health problem in Beagles. An overweight Beagle is at higher risk for intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), diabetes, joint problems, and a shortened lifespan. Their food obsession makes weight management challenging but essential.

Epilepsy in Beagles

Beagles have a higher-than-average rate of idiopathic epilepsy (seizures with no identifiable cause). Seizures typically begin between ages 1–5. While frightening to witness, most epileptic Beagles live normal, happy lives with appropriate medication. If your Beagle has a seizure, consult a vet promptly for diagnosis and treatment options.

Ear Infections in Beagles

Beagles' long, floppy ears trap moisture and reduce airflow — the perfect environment for bacterial and yeast infections. Signs include head shaking, scratching at ears, odor, and dark discharge. Weekly ear cleaning with a veterinary ear cleaner is the best prevention. Never use cotton swabs inside the ear canal.

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)

Beagles are a chondrodystrophic breed, meaning their spinal discs age faster than average. IVDD can cause sudden back pain, weakness, or paralysis. Keeping your Beagle at a healthy weight and using ramps instead of stairs reduces the risk significantly.
